Apocolysta woke up on a bed of flamingo leaves and looked around for a few moments without moving. West Requies Beach was one of the calmest areas of the outlands. Even Denebe seemed perilous compared to the place she had been residing all week. Everywhere she looked, the only movement she saw came from Sylvans. Enormous, purple crustaceans that walked on land as much as in water. After a few more moments, she got to her feet and brushed the foilage off of her sweat-soaked body.
"Ugh, this is about to get ridiculous," she thought just before she felt the fifty-something dead boulder ticks fall off of her. Because of the natural toxicity of Segnale blood, blood parasites were suseptable to internal damage relative to how much they consume. Most boulder ticks were too greedy to stop until they had consumed enough to kill them. Apocolysta wanted to scream, but was too afraid of who might be around.
It had been a week since the Segnale scare at Braiken had occurred, and the entire week Apocolysta had spent either running or hiding from Bagis, Azure Knights and most importantly, Segita Hunters. All she had learned before fleeing her home was that three of the castle's most beloved heroes had been completely drained of blood. The rampant anti-Segnale sentiment in the land was enough to cause a tidal wave of lynch mobs to come down on any Segnale in sight. The Order of Incar decided to remain neutral, as did most of the magicians, but the poor Bagis, who were hated almost as much as the Segnale, saw this as an opportunity to help their public image. The Segita only joined hunts in which some citizen or official fronted a bounty, but they were both merciless and everywhere. The Regime of Azure Knights just did it for the pleasure and slaughter, using their religion to place them on the moral high-ground.
Apocolysta was but an infant when her parents fled from Abaddon's grasp to Haran, and finally to Braiken Castle, but she grew up with the hatred and discrimination that nearly destroyed the first generation of Segnale refugees. If it weren't for a sympathetic Post Commander at Braiken, the refugees would have been slaughtered on the sight by the Azure Knights and Segita. Instead, they were cast into a poverty and disease-stricken ghetto, while all the healers of remote skill were drafted into the army and sent off to help battle the Pit-born. Not long after Apocolysta's parents were drafted, the Segnale ghetto recieved it's first list of war casualties. The list covered two entire scrolls and many names were mispelled, shortened or replaced by a derrogatory nickname given to them. Both of Apocolysta's parents were on the first list, under the heading of "Mistaken for Enemy." The majority of the casualties were under that heading.
Apocolysta was now 31 years old, barely past childhood in a Segnale's lifespan, and on the run from almost every warrior in Haran. Just as she is about to head to the beach, she hears a Bagi battle horn and freezes.
